It’s a fact of life that we all age and our pets are no exception. Perhaps you’ve noticed your own dog showing signs of aging or maybe you’re considering adopting a senior dog. Either way, it won’t surprise you that taking care of an aging dog requires a different approach than a younger dog. This doesn’t mean it isn’t any less enjoyable though! Here are some tips to help your senior pup make the most of their golden years.
1. Maintain regular vet visits
As with any age, it is important to maintain regular vet visits and especially if your pal has developed any health issues or conditions. Additionally, as part of their overall preventative care, pay attention to their weight and dental hygiene. Even if you’ve never really brushed your dog’s teeth, it’s not too late to take care of their oral hygiene which is a major contributing factor in overall health. Here’s why and some tips for doggy dental hygiene.

2. Provide toys for entertainment
While your buddy might be aging, that doesn’t mean they don’t like to have fun! Continue to help your dog beat boredom with new toys. Try our rope chew toy sets (which also helps with breaking down plaque) or these stuffing-less plush toys. Toys are a terrific way to provide your pup with mental stimulation as well as exercise – both incredibly important for your pet.

3. Exercise at their pace
We know that exercise is key in maintaining your dog’s health and well-being but of course, they may not move like they used to. If your dog is able, take them for a stroll but slow down the pace. If they have developed any joint issues, it’s best to avoid stairs and use ramps whenever possible. Stop for a rest occasionally if they need it and as always, pay attention to your dog’s body and adapt to their needs. Safety is always important so if you’re heading out for a walk when it’s dark, dress them in this dog safety reflective vest.

4. Make accommodations
As your pup is aging, you may need to make some special accommodations around the home such as putting in small ramps and rugs on hardwood floors so they can get better traction as they walk around. Opt for a softer bed especially if they are experiencing joint or mobility issues.

5. Watch their diet
Choose an appropriate diet for your pooch’s age and lifestyle. If you’re unsure, you can always consult your veterinarian for the best plan. They can also guide you in choosing a diet for your pup who has any health conditions such as kidney disease or joint issues. Just like humans, a dog can develop intolerance and allergies to foods so make sure to pay attention to and follow up on any changes that occur as they get older.
